Computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) are critical in today's times, for managing assets. One cannot overlook the management and maintenance of assets that comprise fixed costs and can create a hole in the profit margins of any business. CMMS are systems that monitor and analyze plant equipment operations. They give indications to operators, by checking system-generated data. They point out whether a part is under-performing or is not performing. They can even predict when a part may break down. The systems can be both reactive and proactive. In the first instance, maintenance is indicated once failure occurs. In the second case, they indicate the need for maintenance when failure seems likely.

Enterprise Asset Management Projects - Major Challenges

According to a recent survey, integration between two Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems is a big challenge. It poses obstructions before organizations, not permitting them to achieve the optimal value for their investments. The top business challenges of EAM projects include financial control, timely visibility with regard to project costs and status as well as the accuracy of project information. Survey reports point out that while executing large projects like construction, information sharing among departments becomes crucial. For the projects to be on time, and within budget, project managers and finance executives must have access to timely and updated data. Since there are high volumes of projects in many organizations, full automation and linking between systems is the only way to ensure efficiency and smoothness in execution. EAM projects are always on the move with the most common activities being routine work (82%), followed by turn-around/ shutdown/ outage projects (74%) and construction of new facilities (58%). A majority of organizations, today still execute a high volume of EAM projects without automated links between their systems, with the result that almost 55% of the projects are completed past the deadline and over 50% are completed over budget.
